IMIAFAN
"Epidemia / Someone Else (Remixes)"
12" EP (2009 4MG Records)
Love and Hate
No one is surprised by a
twelve-inch black standard design vinyl any more; however, the musical
content is much more interesting in this case. The twelve-inch remix
vinyl by the Slovak electro-project ImiAFan does not actually contain
remixes literally; it contains rather remixes and remakes, rework in
other words, in which the composer’s invention of individual „remixes“
is felt. Primary vocal steps and more difficult musical motives are
used from the original tracks, the rest is mainly an excess. This form
of „invention remixes“ stands closer to me – sometimes it brings out
more from the original tracks then expected from the author himself –
and sometime it doesn’t. This is how it is, a life isn’t a feather.
The vinyl contains two remixes of the "Epidemia" track and two remixes
of the "Someone Else" track, so let’s tune in.
A1 - "Epidemia
- Keen K 1983 Mix" Yes, that’s it! We got on the time
machine and found ourselves in the year of 1983 when Depeche Mode
released their amazing album "Contruction Time Again" and when electro-disco
was played in clubs. This really is my cup of tea, a love at first
sight; there is nothing I can do, I am in love. I can’t resist, I am
totally delighted and I am not able to find the right words for praise.
The magnificent sound of the 80’s yet in top-quality offered by
today’s technology with beautiful arrangements. It is minimal after
the first listening, but as a whole it fits perfectly. The only thing
that woke me up from my dreaming was a bit of inaccurate vocal
intonation. On the other side, there is no rule that it is wrong this
way. Where would be Nick Cave, for example, using the same intonation
as Karel Gott? In fact, a small imperfection makes this track unique.
My impression hasn’t changed at all. I like it A LOT. Should a further
mutual co-work between Imiafan and Keen K be the side effect of this
record, it would be just fine.
A2 - "Epidemia – Sneak-Thief
Paranoianoia Mix" Let’s get back to Earth. In my own
perception I am deeply under the ground. The second track is a typical
remix – long, with no life in it, a concentrated boringness-briefly
said. It might be some kind of a base for DJs so they are able to mix
them with fragments from other records at the live-shows, but it is
impossible to listen to it. I have never looked under the cover of the
real DJs, so if there has to be at least one material like this on
each remix vinyl then it is all right. However, for those listeners in
ordinary way, I suggest to turn to the other side right after the
first track.
B1 - "Someone Else – Beta Evers Winter
Remix" Yes, it’s good, it’s good... we talk about music
again. Even if it doesn’t reach the sky like in Keen Ks’ case, it is
very pleasant. There is an initial rough sound paired with sampled
bass guitar that make such an interesting atmosphere when mixed with
an overpowering woman’s voice. It has a lot to offer. There is much
less minimalism, but it’s all right. It took me time to find the way
to this track; it is not just for one listening, but at the end I
liked it very much.
B2 - "Someone Else – Makina Girgir
Mix" The time machine is completely repaired. This time we
are even closer to the beginning of the 80’s – let’s say 1981-1982.
The fans of the first Depeche Mode or Yazoo records know exactly what
I am talking about. The initial woman’s voice gets sounds even better
here – it matches well with oldies-sounds. The excellent remix doesn’t
reach the first favorite track just due to imperfection in sound
quality. The atmosphere is amazing though. There is only one thing I
am missing and that is the absence of the mother tongue. The English
language in this case isn’t the best choice. Moreover, Slovak language
is so tuneful, so maybe next time...
Conclusion: It is a well
done 12" record. Besides the second track, which I didn’t get, just
keep it on. |
