TÖRR
"Törritorium"
LP (2006 Monster Nation)
Rock´n´roll called black metal
Is there any other band,
founded still under the old communist regime, which can say that their
albums are released not only as CDs but also on vinyls? Only thanks to
Monster Nation records there are two bands like this, Root and Törr.
Bands, whixh are not only famous here in the Czech Republic, but also
in abroad. If someone doubts, releasing a vinyl can be a proof... The
last year Törr released their 7th album, which I am just looking at
and listening to.
Concerning the cover, it looks superbly - gatefold, coloured,
lacquered. It shows a skull, nothing new, neither for Törr. But why
not, remember Motörhead (btw. an inspiration for the ö in Törr), they
also had cover with similar themes and no-one would expect anything
else. This skull is pierced by steel pricks and as a whole the picture
makes a big impression. In the inside of the gatefold cover, there is
a photo - all the three band members in a snowy scenery… fishing,
holding the fishhooks in their hands. Törr does not take themselves
too serious. The insert lyrics sheet contains another photo (this time
without the fishhooks).
After the experimental period (albums "Morituri te Salutant" and
"Tanec Svatého Víta") Törr returned (with the previous CD/LP "Made In
Hell") to the area where they always been the best: to the rock´n´roll
called black metal. To black metal in the initial meaning, inspired by
Venom, and to the rock´n´roll influenced by Motörhead. Mix this two
bands 1:1, add soem raw lyrics (in Czech) and the result is Törr.
"Törritorium" includes 13 tracks. The intro brings a specific feeling,
however I think it was made only to something corresponds to the
ingeniuos album title. The first song is determined to be hit, even
the first listening makes this clear. "Čert mě vem" is simply a great
and hellish fast opener. It is followed by modern riffs based
"Revoluce zla" composed by the drummer Radek Sladký, the newest band
member. He is also an author of the next song, "Generace mrtvol". A
song with fast and slow parts, very interesting (not that much the
first words of it - „shits hit us from all the sides…“). "Ten den" is
another mid-tempo song, followed by a fast "Vnitřní hlas" with melodic
chorus (Go and shoot the people / go and do not count the bodies / God
does not see this anyway / this is how it is going). The begining and
the end of the following track "Rezervace" seems to be influenced by "Itsári"
of Sepultura. This song sounds as taken from the "Morituri te Salutant"
album. On that one, it would not be special in any way. The last one
on A-side is "Přes propast času", which can be percived as a perfect
ballad, with all the traditional and unchanging patterns - but it
works.
B-side is opened by "Zatracenej" and "Lůza" which is that hard and
fast. Followed by breath-taking hit "Milion let" (the word „million“
is maybe used too often). "Gotika" with a great guitar works in a good
coordination with the vocals and the rhythmic... "Exit Us" is the last
song and it sounds more modern than the rest (the third song written
by Sladký - all the other songs were composed as always by Hereš and
lyrics written by Henych).
The last song can be perceived as a kind of bonus, "Kladivo na
čarodějnice" in English (called "Mallevs Maleficarvm"). It is the same
story as I have talked about in V.A.R. release (please check). The
English versions are fine, of course, but Törr and V.A.R. are much
more authentic when using their native language.
To sum up, this album is simple and multifarious at the same time, it
combines black metal with rock´n´roll and it continues in the
direction of "Made in Hell". Törritorium is generally little slower,
but still very hard one. This record will be appreciated by orthodox
old Törr fans, as well as by the younger metal fans. |
